A con-man who posed as an oil tycoon in online dating sites to lure women into relationships so he could steal their identities was slapped with nearly four years behind bars Thursday as his victims lashed into him.

Eight women submitted letters beseeching Manhattan federal court Judge Laura Swain to throw the book at scam artist John Edward Taylor before she sentenced him to three years and 10 months in prison.Four of them trudged through the heavy snowstorm to confront him in person. “What’s really scary is how good he is at doing it,” one of the women said through sobs as Taylor looked away. “Don’t let him have any more victims.”
Wrote another, “I truly didn’t believe there were monsters like him out there.” She was 19 when the 47-year-old nearly bankrupted her.
Many of the women, whose names were redacted by the court, said they’d contemplated killing themselves because the jerk had so thoroughly destroyed their lives.
“The lies began the second we met, and continued until the end. Everything out of his mouth was meant to manipulate and deceive,” another victim wrote. “Each time we had a question or doubt, [Taylor] would have another story to cover up the lie.”
Using a string of aliases, the fraudster would meet women on popular sites like Match.com, eHarmony, Craigslist and Seeking Arrangement, prosecutors said. He would then gain access to their personal financial information, either stealing money or opening various accounts in their name.
From September 2009 to March 2016, he stole more than $270,000 from some 16 women, authorities said. When they realized the funds were missing, he would make empty promises or threaten them — often saying he would send nude pictures of the women to their bosses unless they dropped it.

Defense attorney Julia Gatto told the court her client was in the throws of a mental health crisis, had tried to kill himself and been caught “carving things into his arms.”
“A long prison sentence could very well kill Mr. Taylor,” she added.

“I was a liar. I did not keep my word. I was a bragging arrogant thief,” Taylor whimpered Thursday, pausing intermittently to cry. “I don’t want to continue to be those things.”
Swain noted that Taylor, who copped to charges of wire fraud and sending threatening communications in September, had been sexually assaulted while in jail, and had been diagnosed with PTSD and bipolar disorder.

“Mr. Taylor is sick and the conduct that brought him here today shows that he is also dangerous,” Swain said before handing down her sentence, which included five years probation.
